I phoned the guy myself and over the following nights recorded interviews with him about developments.

He was clearly caught up in the fear and excitement of events. In one interview he is in the street prematurely celebrating the fall of Gadaffi.

In another he is admitting his fear that the city will be attacked and saying he is amazed that people are ready to die.

One night he told me that he was recommending to protesters that they return the weapons they had captured from the army and trust the local commandos to protect them. Some were following this advice, others were holding onto the weapons, anxious that an army leader who had joined them the previous day now seemed to have disappeared.

I think these are important pieces of internet journalism and I hope they will provide raw material for a written piece on the difference between blogging and mainstream journalism.

Here are the four recordings I have made so far, the latest being at the top.

If you have time, start with the first at the bottom and listen to them all.
At last night's meeting of Blog Standard, Mr Ulster, Allan Leonard [in the middle], spoke in favour of the Posterous blogging platform and showed how simple it is and how easily contributors can update the site simply by emailing their content to it. But I was wondering if this denies the blogger some of the creative satisfaction of playing with layout.

See you there.malachihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17503873536502708801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6528948542084617591.post-2360191247545512522011-02-03T10:51:00.004+00:002011-02-03T10:58:28.291+00:00New Media Moghuls

We had another meeting of Blog Standard last night in the new room made available to us in the Peter Froggatt Centre at QUB. Ghastly room -like a class - and the first thing I had to do was declare that I am not a teacher, as all the new members sat in the rowed chairs waiting for a pronouncement or instruction.

But the equipment was good.

Raymond McCullough came so I got him to do a presentation on his podcasting venture, Celtic Roots.
He gets thousands of downloads of the music he plays.

Raymond shows how he uploads music to a free hosting site Podomatic and recommended it as a site that is easy to use.
There are others, of course, like Podcastpeople, Soundcloud and Divshare.

Bobballs did a presentation on his site and discussed, among other things, the jeopardy of libel actions or threats of them.

But for me the star of the night was David Vance, founder of A Tangled Web

Vance talked of the incredible energy that he puts into two sites and his twitter account to keep his blogs alive. His output is greater than that of many working journalists and his skills and experiences would qualify him to be a senior editor on a newspaper.

At the same time he argues that he is sidelined by the media for holding views that don't accord with a 'liberal consensus'.

He wasn't there to give a political lecture and the key point he made is that the best way to keep a blog alive and to win followers is to add content every day.malachihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17503873536502708801noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6528948542084617591.post-11808731458868122342011-01-23T20:06:00.003+00:002011-01-31T09:50:15.057+00:00Next meetingPlease note, the next meeting of Blog Standard will be a 7.pm on Feb 1st at the Peter Froggatt Centre. That's me in the middle twiddling with a beard and one other member is, of course, holding the camera.
It was a good session, with presentations by Ruth Jackson, Jude Collins, Oliver Corr and Bronagh Lawson.
Steve McBride and Geoff McGimpsey who were there will hopefully share their blogging ambitions with us at later meetings.
We have a decent room in the Peter Froggatt Centre now with a projector, a computer that works and audio.
Until now we have been using the seminar room in the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry, which I am planning to rename, The Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry, Broadcast Journalism, Memoir, Blogging and Ribald Exchanges.malachihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17503873536502708801noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6528948542084617591.post-87470426169555407592011-01-10T19:57:00.001+00:002011-01-11T18:52:09.772+00:00Meeting at QueensBlog Standard will meet on Tuesday 11th at the Peter Froggatt Centre at QUB at 7.pm

We are meeting at the Seamus Heaney Centre (48 University Road) at 7.00.

This is open to anyone who blogs or is interested in blogging.malachihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17503873536502708801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6528948542084617591.post-37048112537064694202010-12-06T10:53:00.002+00:002010-12-06T10:57:53.032+00:00It's working! The Nov 30 meeting was a bit shambolic on account of the computer deciding to upload something, crash and then go through System Restore. Alaninbelfast had a wee 3g notebook with him which got us through some of the embarrassment of talking to people about how to set up a blog and not being able to show them much.
And there was me trying to impress Tara West and Ruth Jackson!
Icedcoffee and Filmplicity turned up and Icedcoffee made a case for using hosted Wordpress instead of the free version.
The big choice for starters is whether to use Wordpress or Blogger. There are other options too, like Tumblr and Posterous. I like Blogger - which this site is on - because it allows the embedding of code for audio and video that may be hosted on other free sites, while free Wordpress rejects most of it, though it allows Youtube.

A beginner on Wordpress may get ambitious later on and find s/he can't post items that are hosted elsewhere. I have found ways round this for audio, using plugins, but I love doing slideshows with Soundslides and I can't post them there.
But I think Icedcoffee is right and that's the way I have gone in setting up a new site for the Writer in Residence position at QUB. I picked the domain name first, bought it from the host I use for The Street and ArtsTalk and then set up a site with Wordpress. The host is JustHost which allows unlimited space.

The new site is The Writer's Log.

Anyway, the next meeting of Blog Standard will be on December 14. I'll have more details before that. I will also post information to my facebook page.malachihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17503873536502708801noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6528948542084617591.post-52830684384003153252010-11-25T17:19:00.002+00:002010-11-25T17:22:26.200+00:00The Next MeetingBlog Standard will convene next on Tuesday Nov 30 at 7.00pm at the Seamus Heaney Centre, 48 University Road Belfast.
The seminar room, which normally caters for gatherings of intense poets comparing metaphors and scansion was taken over by bloggers and new media activists and you would almost have heard the wainscotting groan, if there was any.
We had presentations from Moochin Photoman, Ian Livingstone and Alaninbelfast.
They showed their blogs and talked about their intentions and creative motivations.
We had about fifteen people there, some of them old hands at blogging and podcasting, some novices.
I played clips from my slideshows on The Street, making the case that you get better images with a stills camera and better audio with a separate recorder; which isn't to say I won't use video in the future.
We decided to devote the next session to an introductory workshop, to get the beginners started, hoping that some of the more experienced ones with little to learn will come and chip in some tips on blogging platforms, host sites, kit and creative approach.
That meeting will be on Tuesday November 30th, again in the Heaney Centre, at 7.00pm.
If you want to come and you weren't at last night's meeting, please post a message below or email me directly at mal.odoherty@qub.ac.ukmalachihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17503873536502708801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6528948542084617591.post-61090970397955575502010-11-09T10:05:00.002+00:002010-11-09T16:22:25.076+00:00First MeetingBlog Standard is an initiative by the Writer in Residence at Queen's University, Belfast - that's me, Malachi O'Doherty.
The aim is to foster discussion among bloggers, podcasters and all sorts of creative internet and new media activists.
Let's talk about what we are doing and where we are going with our democratised broadcast and publishing technology.
If you want to be part of Blog Standard, come to the first meeting at the Seamus Heaney Centre, 48 University Road, Belfast on Tuesday November 16 at 7pm.
All the better if you have a blog, slideshow, video or podcast to share and can tell us how you set it up and what you hope to achieve with it.
Blog Standard will be a pooling of ideas about blogging, the potential, the philosophies, the technology, the fun.
And you are welcome.malachihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17503873536502708801noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6528948542084617591.post-54189321858960964202010-10-25T12:42:00.009+01:002010-10-25T13:07:59.262+01:00The JourneyDo you remember the Amstrad PCW or Wordperfect 5.1?
The journey from the typewriter through the internet and into the Cloud has been a long and rapid one for the first generation to turn digital.
Militants and former paramilitary activists are branding their messages and writing them on the walls. But the state wants to stay out of that quarrel and all new public art is devoid of ethnic or historical association.
